Mr. Sridhar Murthy who had researched the history of Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple Basavanagudi, states that it dates back to the year 1689 CE, at that time Bangalore had come to the regime of Sri Chikka devaraya, who had appointed 3 persons as Shanbhag (Tax collectors), among them Sri Achutha Raya build this temple in the year 1710 CE. but in the year 1799 CE when British General Harrys took over Bangalore Pete (Town) this place was abandoned for some time.

Later in the early 20th Century, Sri Bellave Venkatanarayappa who was a professor in Bangalore Central College, during the construction of a house in Basavanagudi discovered this temple which was on a ruined stage. at that time in the year 1901 CE, the rocks and stones removed from the “Bangalore Fort” were on auction, he brought (Sri Bellave Venkatanarayappa) the stones and renovated this Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple at Basavanagudi.  by the year 1903 CE the Temple was completely reconstructed as it looks today.  In the Year 2003 CE, the 100th year of this temple was celebrated and Sri Bellave Venkatanarayappa was remembered for this 40 years of contribution to this temple.

Besides worshiping and praying to Lord Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple Basavanagudi, other things to do here is,

  1. Ashwattha Katte is Peepal Tree with a circumambulate path (This deed is called Ashwattha Katte Pradakshina). The Hindu temples are built keeping in mind the multidimensional aspects of the Sanatana Dharma, which emphasizes the Moksha (Moksha means liberation from birth and rebirth cycle) aspect and the Artha (Artha means worldly pleasure, Assets, tangible things). For Artha-related queries In Vedic astrology, the planet Jupiter (Guru) is attributed (Karakatwa).
Ashwattha Tree (peepal Tree, Ficus religiosa, or sacred fig) is assigned to the Planet Guru, thus for Marriage, Artha related problems one has to do Pradakshina of Ashwattha Tree.
  2. Astonishing scientific fact about the Ashwattha tree is one of the rare trees which gives Oxygen 24 hours, Usually, Neem trees are also can be found along with the Ashwattha tree in “Ashwattha Katte” yet another tree which not only gives Oxygen 24 hours but also absorbs the sulfur dioxide (SO2) from the atmosphere, Thus doing Pradakshina in Ashwattha Katte gives most required Oxygen (O) for free.
  3. Nagara Katte is a circumambulate path here the idols of the Snake god along with Lord Subramanya will be there. As per Sanatana Dharma, the Snakes are a representation of the unpredictable universal energy, Killing a snake will stop prosperity thus never killing or harming snakes. As per Vedic Astrology, the planets Rahu-Ketu Represent The snake worshipping it gives prosperity, Interestingly Indians are more prone to have snakes in their dream.
  4. Navagraha temple, most of the Temples in India will have one place dedicated to Navagraha with circumambulating paths, the Nine planets in Vedic astrology.
